Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens has its origins from the walled garden which started life back in 1765 . It has evolved through the passage of time and neglect to become one of the best private woody plants collections in the country. It is a landscape developed and managed over many decades to help preserve this historic garden yet it has been over laid with new ideas, recent plant introductions and forward thinking management criteria. The gardens unique sheltered woodland valley close to the sea provides its own special micro-climate which has enabled the garden to be at the forefront of growing rare, unusual and exotic, half hardy plants from around the world. There is also a strong connection with its past as the Ilchester estates management and the owners, are indeed the very same family who have held stewardship over this site since it's foundation in 1765. This time kept secret garden deserves better recognition in the world of horticulture as its long running restoration project since massive storms of 1987 and 1990 nearly put an end to this special atmospheric garden. Our story is one of perseverance as we are slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
