This year Alan has celebrated his 50th work anniversary in a career that has included designing, building and project managing more than sixty RHS show gardens.
He has run his own successful landscape gardening practice, and 2001 he was invited to become head gardener to Goodwood House and Estate – a role he ‘longed for’ after many years of either building gardens for others or, in his words, ‘transient show gardens with their inherent build it and break it down theatrical nature.’
Throughout his career he has made it his mission to share his knowledge and help others on their way – whether through the books and columns he has written for practitioners in the industry or the many, highly successful seminars he has run for professionals working in landscape creation and landscape management up and down the UK.
He has given his time as a RHS show gardens judge, a mentor for the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and an industry representative to Government.
And, in the interests of supporting his colleagues in the industry, he has founded no less than two professionals associations – the Association of Landscape Professionals and the Professional Garden Consultants Association.
